Black and White Magnolia

Some Fairy Tale

Photography. And collage. Somehow these two forms have melded for me. I separate and combine these forms, and where I start is not where I end up. Or is it?
I was born and raised in Memphis and, for me, it's always been the greatest place to photograph. I photoed for many years in black and white, mostly landscape and urban landscape. My b/w photography was all old school, done with my trusty Pentax K1000. I resisted a digital, or even one of those cameras before digital that had all the bells and whistles. In the summer of 2004 I was persuaded to take up the digital on a trip to NYC.
In 2000, I started doing cut and paste collage from old women's magazines. I'm fascinated by the old ads, and how we got from there to here. I began doing collage with old food ads, and larger ones with ads depicting women in the 40s, 50s, and 60s.
After I discovered digital I found that instead of using found depictions, I could combine my photos to create my own landscapes. To me, photography is the key that unlocks all my other images. Memphis gives me an unending supply of interesting things to look at and photo, and to transform into something else if need be.
